Scroll Ideas and Experimentation

For one of my format ideas, I had the idea to create a scroll. In wanting to push my idea further so its not so simple, I decided I wanted to add a viewfinder, and make the entire narrative look like it's moving. So, as you scroll through, the viewfinder would stay in place or move along with the scroll, as to not confuse the reader. Although I really liked the idea of this format, and how different it would be to everyone else, I found the technical aspects quite difficult to create, and having to rewind the scroll to the beginning would be difficult, so I decided to scrap the idea.

This page is the start of my experimentation for this format idea, showing me lightly sketching out different ideas, my inspirations and how it could work. I did end up going for the third choice, the hardest of them all, although it was a fight between the second and third idea.

I began with simply creating an average scroll, using paper and circular pencils. This progressed alot into the end video, with me adding the viewfinder, then creating a mechanic with tracks and a pull string to test if the viewfinder would move with the scroll. Whilst it did end up working to some extent, it would either always get stuck, or the viewfinder would pop out of its tracks. I tried multiple different ways to get the system to work, adding bigger tracks, changing the type of string used etc. Although I am proud of how far I pushed the idea, I quickly realized it wouldn't work to the extent I had wished and dropped the idea in search of a new one. I have, however, brought the scroll idea into another format idea.
